Macclesfield-Outdoors Cycling Route: Macclesfield Circular

Start/Finish: Car Park on Clough Bank, Bollington. Distance: 16.9 miles (27.2 km). Difficulty: Easy to medium. Time: 2 to 3 hours

 

 

1.        From the car park, turn left along the Middlewood Way (which runs adjacent to the back of the car park). Follow the Middlewood Way out of Bollington.

2.        Eventually the Middlewood Way passes over a bridge (with inclined slopes either side) which takes you over the A523 Macc bypass. Turn left after the bridge.

3.        Where the Middlewood Way meets a road (Brocklehurst Way), turn left, and go straight on at the roundabout into Hulley Road.

4.        Where Hulley Road meets Hurdsfield Road (the B5470), cross straight over onto Higher Fence Road. Higher Fence Road becomes a rough lane and has a traffic barrier half way along it, but is passable.

5.        Higher Fence Road bears left and then becomes Cottage Lane. Cottage Lane emerges onto the main road (Buxton Road).

6.        Turn left then immediately right into Cranford Avenue.

7.        Turn first right down Brookfield Lane.

8.        Turn left at the bottom of Brookfield Lane onto Black Road.

9.        Follow Black Road  to the left just before the Navigation pub.

10.     Go straight on at crossroads (still Black Road).

11.     Black Road bears right and becomes Gunco Lane.

12.     At the end of Gunco Lane, turn left onto Byrons Lane.

13.     Bear right into Bullocks Lane (signposted Macc Garden Centre). Bullocks Lane crosses over the Macc canal, and eventually reaches a crossroads.

14.     Go straight on at the crossroads down Leek Old Road.

15.     At the end of Leek Old Road, turn right down Radcliffe Road, which soon meets the main Leek Road (A523). On this corner is a pub, the Fools Nook.

16.     Cross straight over onto Woodhouse End Road, which crosses over the Macc canal via an old wooden swing bridge before going uphill.

17.     Soon the village of Warren is reached. Woodhouse End Road runs straight into Woodhouse Lane.

18.     Turn right at the end of Woodhouse Lane onto Church Lane, which soon reaches the main Congleton Road (A536) at a cross roads.

19.     Cross straight over the Congleton Road, into Dark Lane.

20.     Ignore Gawsworth Road to the right, and continue along Dark Lane to Lower Pexhill.

21.     Turn right then immediately left, to cross over Pexhill Road (B5392) into Bearhurst Lane.

22.     At the end of Bearhurst Lane, turn right onto School Lane, which passes Henbury Hall on the left.

23.     Eventually School Lane meets the main Chelford Road (A537). On the corner here is a pub, the Blacksmiths Arms. Taking care, cross straight over onto Pepper Street.

24.     At the end of Pepper Street, turn left onto Church Lane. You are now in Henbury.

25.     Church Lane runs straight into Andertons Lane as it leaves Henbury.

26.     Turn right at the end of Andertons Lane into Whirley Road.

27.     Turn left into Sandy Lane.

28.     Turn right at the end of Sandy Lane onto Alderley Road (B5087).

29.     Turn left down Macclesfield Road (signposted Prestbury).

30.     Bear right at the mini roundabout and cycle through Prestbury village.

31.     Bear right just past Prestbury railway station, over the railway, onto Prestbury Lane.

32.     Turn left at the top of this incline - this is still Prestbury Lane.

33.     At the end, turn right onto London Road (A523). Immediately cycle onto the pavement on the left here, which runs straight on into a disused lane.

34.     At the end of this lane, turn left along Flash Lane (B5091).

35.     At the end of Flash Lane, turn left along Bollington Road (B5090).

36.     At the bottom of the hill, turn right up Grimshaw Lane.

37.     Turn right into Clough Bank, to return to the car park.
