Horse Riding

The lanes and bridleways around Macclesfield are popular with local riders. Safe, traffic free rides can be found along the Middlewood Way, a 10-mile route through picturesque countryside (pictured here). In fact the Middlewood Way is bridleway route number 1081 (see Bridleways.co.uk). Access to the Middlewood Way is either from the south, at horse access point by Bollington viaduct, or from the north, at Rose Hill, Marple. Horsebox parking is recommended at Jackson’s brickworks, Higher Poynton and Rose Hill, Marple. The Middlewood Way is level and flat with compacted surface; horse riders share a parallel route with cyclists.

There are concessionary bridleways in Macclesfield Forest where horse riding is permitted. A leaflet is available showing all of the paths through the forest, including the concessionary bridleways. Bridleway route number 823 runs from Macclesfield Forest to Teggs Nose to Langley to Macclesfield Forest (see Bridleways.co.uk). This ride makes use of the Macclesfield Quiet Lane initiative that has been set up in the area, so all road work is on minor rural roads. The rocky tracks on the earlier part of this route are awkward for horses to navigate, so you need to ensure your horse is well shod. The terrain is undulating with some quiet steep hills both uphill and downhill, but they are in the main on good surfaces.

Horse riders are welcome on the dedicated 58 miles (93km) of off road trails in the Peak District. They are ideal for those who wish to relax and soak up the scenery at any time of year, whilst the bridleway network opens up opportunities for the more adventurous.

The area around Alderley Edge is also popular. A little further afield there is Lyme Park, near Disley, a magnificent estate on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
